Last weekend I attended the Riesling Rendezvous at lovely Chateau Ste. Michelle, in Woodinville.
This is an annual conference that is hosted on a rotating basis; one year at the Chateau, the next year in Germany, then in Australia, and then back at the Chateau. It attracts industry experts and enthusiasts from all over the world and is a fascinating experience, delving into the wonders of Riesling for three days.
Winemakers bring their best, to show off the huge range that Riesling offers. The producers at this conference came from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, British Columbia, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Michigan and New York. Riesling is a sturdy grape and does well all over the world!
The data indicates that most people think Riesling is only a sweet wine. Actually, Riesling ranges from bone dry to ultra-sweet and is an incredibly diverse grape to work with. Riesling can range in aromas and flavors from citrus fruit to tropical fruit and also sometimes has a petrol aroma that is very common in Old World wines.
Riesling was Dr. Clore’s favorite wine to drink, so we make sure to have a bottle in our lineup every day. Come visit us and see what you prefer – dry, off dry, medium, medium sweet or sweet, and let us teach you the difference or explore a style you haven’t yet discovered!
